Luan Kowalek
"Friends"
is one of the themes of Late Night Heroes, Luann Kowalek's new album, and that's fitting because this Edmonton-based singer and songwriter has a rare talent for gathering good friends around her. One of Kowalek's many friends is Wyckham Porteous, who, after hearing her perform at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival-last year was her third appearance here-advised ragged pup records to "sign her before a big label does." Ragged pup took his suggestion, and Late Night Heroes, which they say offers a more personal view of Kowalek and the things that affect her life and music than her two previous recordings did, is the result. Over the years, other friends have encouraged Kowalek to continue writing songs and performing; still others join her on the recording, such talents as guitarist Chris Smith, drummer Miche Pouliot, bassist Mike Lent, keyboardist Ron Casat and vocalists Lin Elder, Rachelle VanZanten and Daisy Blue Groff. The result of all their efforts is what is described as a "diverse and sparkling album."
