Martin Sexton
Martin
Sexton's live show is a vocal buffet, in which you hear a growling bluesman, a fleeting falsetto, a seasoned yodeller, an uncanny trumpet imitator, and a jazz scat man wrapped into one unbelievably talented singer-songwriter. Sexton combines elements of folk, gospel, blues, ragtime, jazz and Eastern European musical influences to create a surprisingly natural sound.
One of 14 children, Martin left his home in Syracuse, NY in 1989 to plant his musical career in Boston. He found an audience through college radio stations, coffeehouses, open mikes, street corners and subway stations. His first cassette, a self-released work called In the Journey, sold a whopping 16,000 copies. Since then, he's won two Boston Music Awards; garnered the 1994 National Academy of Songwriters' Artist of the Year Award; shared the stage with Stephen Stills, Art Garfunkel, Jackson Browne and John Hiatt; and released his debut CD, Black Sheep.
