Mara!
Australia's
foremost folk-jazz ensemble consists of Mara Kiek with vocals and percussion; Llew Kiek on guitar and bouzouki; Steve Elphick on double bass; Sandy Evans on soprano and tenor saxes; Paul Cutlan on saxophone; and Tony Gorman on clarinet and alto saxophone.
Mara! combines a unique blend of traditional voices and instruments from many countries, with jazz improvisations. Coupled with Mara Kiek's extraordinary voice, Mara! has impressed critics and music lovers around the world. The music ranges from the gentlest of lyrical medieval songs to powerful East European dances, from Anglo-Celtic traditions to those of Australia's more recent migrants. All are stamped with a contemporary Australian feel, which allows the musicians to improvise and experiment while retaining a healthy respect for their sources.
The group's 12-year history includes broadcasts, concerts, workshops and recordings in 12 countries. The fifth album, Ruino Vino, was recorded in Sydney in 1993, and they completed their seventh European tour in August 1994.
So what do the critics say?
". . . joyful seductive world music . . .," Sydney Morning Herald; ". . . a coup de charme which goes right to the heart," Le Telegramme (France); " . . . their virtuosity and unexpected instrumental maneuvers are breathtaking." Folk Roots (London).
