Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens
Spell
it Mbaqanga, and pronounce it "um-ba-KON-ga"-then get ready to dance. The infectious music comes from the South African townships and is performed by Mahlathini, the 60-year-old 'Lion of Soweto' backed by the Mahotella Queens.
Well into their 30th year of performing, the group is lead by the powerful baritone of Simon Nkabinde, or Mahlathini (which stands for "jungle on his head"). He's backed by the harmonies of the Mahotella Queens, who also provide inventive dance accompaniment. Playing behind them is the Makgona Tsohle Band, which translates "jack of all trades."
This kind of music has enjoyed a resurgence-particularly after Paul Simon's Graceland-and the troupe has brought audiences to their feet around the world.
Marks Mhangwane leads the Mahotella Queens on lead guitar. Singers Hilda Tloubatla, Mildred Mangxola and Nobesuthu Mbadu are backed by Joey Mabe on keyboards, Sam Jagome on rhythm guitar, Phillemon Hamole on drums and Mzwandile David on bass.
