Great Big Sea
Get ready to catch a wave, because Great Big Sea is on its way. How big a wave? Well, last year the East Coast Music Awards held a phone-in poll, and the Celtic rock band from Newfoundland beat out Ashley MacIsaac, Laura Smith, the Barra MacNeils and the Rankin Family as Entertainer of the Year.
The group presents traditional Newfoundland tunes (you'll get to hear classic shanties) with original material and eclectic covers ranging as far afield as Slade. The result is described as having the humor of the Barenaked Ladies and Moxy Fruvous, plus a serious side that holds a lot more water.
While all four members sing, Alan Doyle plays guitar, mandolin and bouzouki; Sean McCann plays guitar, bodhran, tin whistle and snare drum; Darell Power is on bass guitar; and Bob Hallett plays button accordion, tin whistle, fiddle, mandolin and mandola. Wax your dancing shoes and forget the "Tell your ma" stuff-Kawabunga dudes.
