Alpha Yaya Diallo

Alpha Yaya Diallo is known for his tight guitar playing, combining the Manding and Foulah guitar style with contemporary jazz sounds. Joining Alpha, is his back-up band since 1992, Baffing. Alpha Diallo is also known for his strong Balafon and Djembe playing. As lead vocalist he sings in Sous Sous, Malinke, Foulah, French and some English. His original compositions address social issues, celebrate common joys, and the essence of the human spirit.
Alpha Diallo, a serious player since the age of 12, was born in Conakry, Guinea. During his university studies he became band leader for the Sons of Rais, the University of Conakry band. With them he toured extensively throughout West Africa taking his enthusiasm to Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leonne, Liberia and Morocco. After graduation he went on to perform with Love Systems, Kaloum Star and Sorsornet Rhythm. After moving to Europe, he was quickly invited to join Fatala, the international WOMAD recording success. With them he toured the festival and concert circuit in Germany, Italy, U.K. , Holland, Switzerland and Belgium. He also played various folk and jazz festivals across Canada and fell in love with the country. He now makes his home in Vancouver. His band Baffing, who he has been playing with since 1992 are: Xerxes Gohbai, Thierry Matumona, Aboubarou Cumana, Yamoussa Cumana, Aicha Sylla, and Eliot Polsky.
